.

What Exactly Is Sciatica?

Sciatica is not a hereditary disease or a disease at all. Instead, it’s the name of the symptoms that occur when your sciatic nerve is pinched or compressed. Typically, this happens when spinal misalignment causes a spinal disc to herniate and spill out onto the sciatic nerve.

Your spine has cushions that prevent the bones from rubbing against each other and act as shock absorbers. These little cushions are called discs. They have an outer casing that keeps the jelly-like cushioning substance inside. If too much pressure is on the cushion, the outer casing will tear, causing a pinched nerve.

The sciatic nerve is the longest in the body. It begins in the lower back and branches off to travel down both legs to the feet. When this nerve is pinched, it can cause back pain, tingling, weakness, numbness, and more anywhere along this route.

Sciatica Treatment

The foundational approach to treatment for any pinched nerve is simple. First, the root cause must be addressed, which in most cases is a misalignment that causes a herniated disc.

Adjustments are a critical part of treatment, as they restore proper alignment to the spine. When alignment is restored, the excess pressure is taken off the disc, so it no longer has a reason to spill out.

Spinal decompression therapy is a core treatment for back pain associated with sciatica. Decompression is a method through which the spine is gently stretched, providing three incredible benefits in the case of sciatica.

  • It further restores alignment and relieves pressure from the disc.
  • It creates a vacuum effect that pulls the disc back into place, releasing the compression on the nerve.
  • That vacuum effect pulls nutrients, oxygen, and blood to the injured area, which promotes further recovery.
